As the visionary behind the Rinehart Institute, established in 1998, my life's journey and continuous educational exploration have culminated in the creation of this unique institution, named in honor of my great-grandmother, Sally Rinehart. Hailing from Mississippi, Sally, a spiritual woman and my namesake, navigated life with resilience, managing a dairy farm, delivering milk, and engaging in entrepreneurial endeavors alongside raising eight children while her husband worked on the railroad. The entrepreneurial and spiritual legacy of Sally forms the core of the Rinehart Institute.
My academic foundation includes degrees from the University of Memphis and Western Michigan University—a BS in Special Education, along with MAs in Physical Education and Counseling. Fueled by a passion for lifelong learning, I've delved into diverse fields such as alternative healing modalities, indigenous healing traditions, mind/body techniques, meditation, diversity, transcultural communication perspectives, and nutritional therapy for mental health. This eclectic knowledge forms the basis of my holistic therapeutic approach and informs the values that guide both my practice and daily life.
Having initially dedicated many years to special education, gaining insights into the needs of children, parents, families, and communities, I transitioned seamlessly into personal counseling. The holistic healthcare program at WMU, complemented by a counseling degree, became my perfect fit. Joining the department of Holistic Healthcare at Western Michigan University as an associate professor, I recognized the necessity for a more comprehensive, holistic wellness assessment. I took pride in contributing to the development, completion, and ongoing research of the Holistic Wellness Assessment (HWA).
Since obtaining my counseling degree, the fulfillment of creating and growing the Rinehart Institute within a community of like-minded colleagues has been a dream realized. I am honored to offer this special place as a source of support in navigating the challenges you face today and in becoming the best version of yourself.

"I believe the therapeutic environment can help to facilitate and cultivate a deeper relationship with oneself through awareness and dedication to growth. This process can be challenging yet such a rewarding and enlightening endeavor. I work to hold a nonjudgmental space for each person who comes into my office to turn inward and feel safe and empowered to make changes necessary in their life. We are all unique individuals and I believe it is important to look at the many aspects of a person in the therapeutic process. Self-growth and exploration is a lifelong journey and it begins by making the commitment to you."

I'm Sheila, a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in Individual Counseling for ages 18 and up. Certified in Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counseling, I bring eight years of experience working with individuals facing various challenges.
Life often throws experiences our way that leave us feeling powerless, helpless, and overwhelmed—what we call trauma. When trauma occurs, a part of us gets stuck in the past, carrying with it the thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and beliefs from that moment. These unresolved issues can resurface in the present, triggered by environmental cues or relationship dynamics, bringing back the pain and emotions associated with the trauma.
Whether it's Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, chemical and behavioral addictions, dissociative disorders, suicidal thinking, shame/guilt, self-esteem issues, or struggles with depression and anxiety, I understand the complexities of these challenges. My therapeutic approach focuses on guiding individuals through the process of healing from traumatic experiences.
In my practice, I've witnessed that our brains often resort to avoidance, escape, or disconnection as temporary coping mechanisms. However, true relief comes from confronting and processing these traumatic moments. Through therapy, you don't have to navigate this journey alone. I am here to support you on your path to feeling free, present, and at peace.
